The storage range and why it is narrow

Most refrigerated pharmaceutical products are stored between 2°C and 8°C. The range is narrow because both excursions are damaging: freezing can irreversibly harm many biological products, and elevated temperature accelerates degradation.

The risk in Pakistan's climate is asymmetric — ambient heat and power interruption make the upper bound the usual concern — but freezing damage during transport is a real and under-recognised failure mode.

Temperature mapping

A cold room or refrigerator does not hold a uniform temperature. Mapping identifies hot and cold spots under realistic load, establishing where product may safely be stored and where monitoring sensors should sit.

Mapping should be repeated after significant changes to layout, load or equipment, and documented.

Continuous monitoring and alarms

Continuous electronic monitoring with calibrated sensors, defined alarm thresholds, out-of-hours alarm escalation, and retained records is the baseline. A daily manual temperature reading does not demonstrate overnight control.

Calibration certificates for monitoring equipment should be current and retained.

Validated transport

Transport is where cold chain most often fails. A defensible arrangement uses qualified shipping containers with known hold times, conditioned coolant packs handled to a documented procedure, data loggers travelling with the consignment, and defined maximum transit times.

For a country the size of Pakistan with road transit times measured in days to remote districts, container hold time must be matched to the actual route, not the average one.

Excursion management

Excursions happen. What distinguishes a controlled operation is the response: detection, quarantine, documented assessment against the manufacturer's stability data, a disposition decision by a qualified person, and root-cause investigation.

A supplier who claims excursions never occur is a supplier who is not detecting them.

What to ask a distributor

Request temperature mapping reports, monitoring and calibration records, transport qualification evidence, the excursion procedure, and back-up power arrangements. These documents exist in a competent operation and can be produced on request.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard storage range?

Most refrigerated pharmaceutical products are stored at 2°C to 8°C.

Is freezing a real risk in a hot climate?

Yes. Direct contact with incorrectly conditioned coolant packs during transport is a common cause of freezing damage.
